History was Destroyed
Built in 1920 / Destroyed August 7, 2005
The old original Cherokee School Building (Left) was a 12 room school building with grades from the 1st grade to the 12th grade. It has been a landmark for many years in Turley. During the morning hours of August 2, 2005, it was bulldozed down and only remains a memory in our minds. They said the reason to tear it down was because of a few reasons. It contained some abestos, it needed an elevator for the handicapped, the basement was seeping water inside and the motar between the bricks in the basement was turning to sand.
Tulsa public schools could have saved this building since it contained a lot of history, but as usual, it was cheeper to bulldoze it down then to preserve it. There were several people who went to school there standing on the west side watching it come down with tears in their eyes. A part of them was also being destroyed with the building. I went to school there in that same building and never got sick from the abestos and no one ever needed an elevator to get to their class. Also click the link at bottom of page to see it being bulldozed courtesy of Robert Cooper Sr of Turley. Enjoy the pictures.
